Why Is One of Tallapoosa’s Greatest Assets Being Neglected?

Helton Howland Park Tallapoosa GA

Helton Howland Park is more than just a patch of green space in Tallapoosa—it’s a gathering place, a living memorial, and a reminder of what our community can offer when we choose to invest in it. Families come here to fish at the lake, watch performances at the amphitheater, or enjoy a picnic under the pavilion. It is one of the most recognizable and beloved assets our city has, and it should stand as a point of pride for every Tallapoosa resident.

Yet anyone who visits today can see the reality: this park has been neglected by city leadership for far too long. Maintenance projects have stalled, upgrades have been left unfinished, and meaningful improvements that could make the park a true regional destination remain little more than ideas on paper. What should be one of Tallapoosa’s greatest assets has instead become a missed opportunity.

The truth is, the only reason Helton Howland Park is what it is today is because of the dedication and persistence of local citizens. Most notably, the Haralson County Veterans Association has stepped up time and again where the city has failed. Their commitment ensures that this park continues to serve residents, veterans, and families alike. Just this past weekend, they organized a major event that brought people together, strengthened community bonds, and showcased the park’s value. Without their involvement, the park would have slipped even further into disrepair.

But here’s the encouraging part: with just minimal, consistent support from the city, Helton Howland Park could be transformed into something much greater. Simple investments—resurfacing walking trails, maintaining safe and modern playgrounds, updating restrooms, keeping the amphitheater functional, and finishing long-promised upgrades like paving and bleachers—would turn the park into a true jewel of Tallapoosa. It doesn’t require millions of dollars, only steady commitment and a clear plan of action.

For years, city budgets have included lines for Helton Howland Park, but very little has actually been spent on maintaining or improving it. Families who use the park see the difference every day: cracked paths, outdated facilities, and missed opportunities for recreation. Meanwhile, neighboring towns are putting resources into their own community spaces, and they are reaping the rewards—drawing visitors, boosting local businesses, and creating pride among residents.

This isn’t about pointing fingers—it’s about setting priorities. Parks are not luxuries. They are central to the quality of life in any city. They’re where families gather, children play, and communities grow stronger. Helton Howland Park should be treated as the centerpiece of Tallapoosa’s community spirit, not as an afterthought buried at the bottom of the budget.

Imagine what this park could be: concerts and festivals at the amphitheater, youth sports and recreation leagues on safe fields, expanded walking trails that attract visitors, and family-friendly spaces that make Tallapoosa a destination rather than a pass-through. The foundation is already here—we only need leadership willing to see its potential and act on it.

Helton Howland Park should not be remembered as a story of neglect. It should be a shining example of what happens when a city chooses to invest—even modestly—in its people, its families, and its future.
